Orthodontic Extractions

At Lancashire Oral Surgery Clinic, we understand that orthodontic extractions can feel overwhelming, especially for younger patients.

What Are Orthodontic Extractions?

Orthodontic extractions involve removing one or more teeth to create space in the mouth, typically to prepare for braces. This will be planned by your orthodontist, who will write to us to request the removal of specific teeth.

Why Are Orthodontic Extractions Needed?

Orthodontic extractions are usually required if your teeth are crowded and there is insufficient space to straighten them all. Your orthodontist can discuss this with you in more detail.

What Happens During the Procedure?

After we review your orthodontic treatment plan, we will discuss the specific aspects of your procedure. It is important for patients below 16 years old to attend with their parent or guardian. Usually, the tooth and surrounding areas are numbed with local anaesthetic. The tooth is then loosened and removed. This is often a straightforward process as younger patients undergoing orthodontic treatment will have softer bone surrounding their teeth.

Will the Procedure Hurt?

You should not feel any pain during the procedure, but it is completely normal to feel pressure in the area. Some of our younger patients have never received dental treatment before and may initially struggle to differentiate between pain and pressure. As the numbness wears off, the area might become uncomfortable, and you should take painkillers as advised.

How Long Does Recovery Take?

Most patients recover quickly from orthodontic extractions. You can usually return to normal activities the next day, however we recommend avoiding vigorous activity for 24–48 hours.
